PREFACE

A

large class of people, by force ofcircumstances, are compelled to treattheir own animals when sick or disabled.Qualified veterinarians arenot always available; and all theills and accidents incident to farmanimals do not require professional attendance.Furthermore, the skilled stockman should befamiliar with common diseases and the treatmentof them. He should remember, too, that the maintenanceof health and vigor in our farm stock isthe direct result of well-directed management. Toofrequently this is neither understood nor admitted,and an unreasonable lack of attention, whenanimals are ill or indisposed, works out dire mischiefin the presence of physical disorder and infectiousdiseases. A fair acquaintance with thecommon ailments is helpful to the owner and tohis stock. This leads to health, to prevention ofdisease, and to skill in attendance when disease isat hand.
