TRANSLATOR’S PREFACE.

This little work, which is rather an essay uponthe personal and musical characteristics of Lisztthan a biography of him, as its title indicates, hardlyneeds more than an informal introduction to thepublic. It may safely be left to commend itself toreaders upon its own merits. Unlike most of hisother biographies, Dr. Nohl seems to have addressedhimself to this with feelings of strong personaladmiration and affection for his hero. It appearsto be the universal testimony of those whohave enjoyed Liszt’s acquaintance, not merely hisfriendship, that he has inspired in them the strongestand most intimate feelings of personal attachmentto him by his own genial and generous nature.If at times, therefore, the biographer appears torhapsodize, it is probably because his relations toLiszt make it difficult for him to avoid idealizinghim. If this be so, fortunately there is compensationin the reflection that no other musician ofthe present day, in every admirable quality of headand heart, so nearly approaches the ideal.

In reproducing the selections from Miss AmyFay’s “Music Study in Germany,” which appear[4]in the closing chapter of this volume, the translator,so far as has been practicable, for the German versiondoes not follow the English very closely in itsconnection, or always literally, has made use of theoriginal text. He has also prepared an appendixcontaining much interesting matter that serves toexplain and sometimes to illustrate the contents ofthe work. The list of scholars of the great teacherto which Dr. Nohl also refers in the closing chapter,and which were furnished to the biographer byLiszt himself, will be found at the close of thisappendix.
