PREFACE

This little book, like my bookon Christian Science whichappeared a year ago, is the evolutionof a pamphlet.

The first half of the pamphletwas written in the middle of asleepless night some years ago.The last half was written abouttwo years ago, after I had foundrelief by auto-suggestion from thelifelong bondage of insomnia andvihad thereby doubled my capacityboth for work and play.

First published in the spring of1907 as my weekly message underthe heading of “The Parson’sOutlook” to the 5000 readers ofThe Hampshire Gazette in andabout Northampton, the articleon sleeplessness was republishedby request in the same paper somemonths later; then, as the demandincreased for it, in pamphlet form. This year past it has been usedin the Emmanuel Clinic, both inBoston and Northampton, withsuch gratifying results that morethan 300 sufferers from insomniaviiin one part of the country oranother have testified by letteror by word of mouth to thebenefit they have received fromit.

Dr. Upson’s Insomniaand Nerve Strain is based on theauthor’s discovery of the vaso-neuralcircuit and will not beneglected by those who wish tounderstand certain physical obstaclesto sleep which have hithertobeen largely overlooked. Religionand Medicine, the officialbook of the Emmanuel Movement,is indispensable to any knowledgeof the drugless cure of sleeplessnessixand other nervous functional disorders. And the writings of Dr.
