“Clark Ashton Smith’s story ‘TheGhoul’ is fascinating all the waythrough and the plot one that fits inwith the treatment. I am anxiouslywaiting for more poems by him.
“‘Supernatural Horror in Literature’grows even more absorbing withthe dawn of the Horror Tale. It iscertainly something to tuck away andthink over. Especially interesting ishow the germ started and gained forcein our own country from the Europeanelements and the fact that superstitionis more prevalent in northernblood than in southern, speaking racially—Latinand the like.
“The ‘Annals of the Jinns’ continueswell and R. H. Barlow can getquite a story in so few words.”
You will notice an excellent long poemby Clark Ashton Smith in this issue. We intend to lengthen the installmentsof Lovecraft’s article in future issues—thenext part will take over two fullpages. Barlow’s sixth “Annals” willprobably appear next month.
“Very glad to see the new issue.Smith’s article is extremely apt andtimely. I find that James tends to bepopularly under-appreciated. Barlow’stale is the best yet—he seems to improveconstantly. The verses of Messrs.Lumley and Searight are haunting andexcellent. It’s a good idea to substitutea department of general discussionfor ‘The Boiling Point’.”
“I enjoyed the January issue ofTHE FANTASY FAN. Barlow’slittle tales are certainly clever, and Ihope you will print many of them. Isecond the wish that you express inyour note at the end of the current‘Boiling Point’ column.”
“I just got the February issue ofTHE FANTASY FAN and I findthat it’s o.k., as usual. MarianneFerguson’s article was great!”
“Just finished the February issue ofTHE FANTASY FAN, and in commonwords, it’s a honey! MarianneFerguson’s article about her visit toJules de Grandin was superb! I wantto cast my vote right now for anotherarticle by Miss Ferguson real soon!
“THE FANTASY FAN is nowsix months old and should celebrate!‘The Dweller’ by William Lumleywas a masterpiece, and Richard F.Searight’s poem takes high honors inthis issue.
“All in all; I think this semi-birthdayissue is fine. But there are a fewthings I would like to make commentsabout. ‘The Boiling Point’ should beeliminated, but the readers’ columnshould not be shortened! I agree withMrs. Wooley—you should not inserta contents page, and thus cut outsome interesting feature that could occupythe space. THE FANTASY FAN is going places!”
