A WOUNDED BULL ELK

This book offers to younger readers aseries of pictures of out-door life and big-gamehunting in the West. More thanthis, the author makes us feel not onlythe zest of sport and adventure, but alsothe interest attaching to the habits andpeculiarities of the remarkable animalswhich he describes. It is a field-book,since it is written by a true sportsman outof his own experiences, and its generalspirit tends to a better appreciation of thevalue of close observation of animal life. The elk, bear, goats, deer, and otheranimals which are described, representthe most remarkable large fauna of ourcountry. These descriptions, by oneviwhose acquaintance with them has beenso intimate, have an added value in viewof the diminution in their number.

It is interesting, also, to remember thatthe influence of the author has been constantlyexerted in favor of the preservationof big game and the maintenance ofnational parks and forest reserves, which,in addition to other advantages, includethe protection of these noble forms ofanimal life.
